Homeschooling Seminar

From Jenn

As many of you know, I homeschool Makana and Brison. It has not been easy, especially since we live on such a remote island with no other support group nearby.  I have been hearing about homeschooling conferences for a few years now.  Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity to attend a conference while here in Hawaii.  We shared stories and tips to challenge and motivate our children. I was truly inspired to keep pressing on with joy and expectation for what God has in store this coming year!

Some of my sessions were:

Keeping the H.E.A.R.T.
  • Hope in God
  • Enjoy your Children
  • Accept your Children
  • Reach their Hearts
  • Teach them the Truth
How to Build Lifelong Learners with Math-U-See
Help for the Disorganized Child

During these sessions, I realized I needed to make some changes in the way I homeschool to maximize the benefits for Makana and Brison. I will focus more on character and spiritual development this year. I may also extend the school year. This will allow for a slower pace giving more time for discussion about how God wants to work in and through them. Introducing relative projects will also enforce the lesson being taught.

We were reminded of the fact that in twenty years our children won’t be thanking us for teaching Science problems or America history. They probably won’t remember all the lesson planning or creative teaching methods either. The lasting fruit are the positive memories of having fun, breaking the routine, laughing and making the most of each day. The seasoned homeschooling moms reminded us that before you know it your children will be on their own.  Academic skills are crucial but not as important as spiritual lessons that will carry them through their daily life.

Another concern I have is, that even though they are missionary kids, I wonder if they are getting as much from ministry programs and events as I thought. There is still a language barrier for them. We have attempted to find a class that will teach them the local dialect.  It is not as easy as just signing up for a class but we will pursue other options.

Please continue to pray for me.
