Surfers are Challenged

Derek recently turned 38. His birthday celebration was delayed a week when he was stranded in Surigao City because of bad weather and big waves. When he returned, the weather cleared on Sunday for our staff to have a special bonding time with the Surfer Youth Group around the northern tip of our island. A fun day was planned with lots of eating, which is always a blessing during rainy season when food is scarce. The guys all enjoyed time in and out of the surf.

We love gathering on the beach or under a tree out in nature somewhat like what Jesus did as he ministered to the crowds that gathered. Ministry is simple here; we sang worship songs from our well-worn hand written song sheets that were taped to the side of our truck.

Derek shared about the importance of taking a stand for Christ no matter what the people around us are doing. If our faith is genuine and set in Jesus alone, we will not be easily swayed when the trials or temptations come. People may hurt us or Christians fail us, yet God never fails.

The young people were challenged to read the Bible daily. Derek reminded them that God has a plan for their life and to receive God’s promise and dreams like Joseph, in spite of all that happens in life that may take our eyes and hearts away from God’s promises.

The fulfillment comes as we take hold of truth and obey. It is our prayer that the youth God entrusts to us will rise up out of adversity to know their identity in Christ and do great things for Him.

The day at the beach ended with prayer and a time of affirmation for Derek from each one there and of course one last surf before getting back to class on Monday!
